Heritage Open Days

We’re taking part in the Heritage Open Days 2024

Heritage Open Days (6th -15th September 2024) is England’s largest grass roots heritage festival involving over 40,000 volunteers and 5,000 events.

We will be featuring works relating to the historic town of Beverley throughout our studio galleries along with a selection of prints by Eastgate Studio member Lindy Norton and Andi Dakin in the Studio Gallery.

Last year’s “Heritage” printmaking event at Eastgate Studio was a great success in raising awareness of traditional printmaking to a new audience! Consequently, as part of the “Heritage Open Days”, we’re giving visitors to the gallery the opportunity to see our Albion Press in operation. The event will take place on Saturday 7th September 2024 from 1pm when we will be pulling prints from our print plates.

You’re invited to come along, enjoy the exhibition, share some refreshments and chat about print.

And if you want to try pulling a print on our 1888 Albion flatbed press, we’ll have experienced printmakers at the event offering advice.

Albion flat bed press 1888

Our T. Matthews’ Albion press is situated in the gallery for all to enjoy. Eastgate Studio members work from the studio behind the gallery to prepare their plates for printing on this gorgeous machine!

We’re all proud to be part of its history! The press belonged to the Curwen Press of Plaistow, East London, and has an amazing history!

In summary, during the early 1920’s, The Curwen Press, in Plaistow East London, led by Harold Curwen, pioneered the collaboration between artist, printing and publishing. Paul Nash, Graham Sutherland, Edward Bawden, Eric Ravillious, Bernard Freedman, and many more designers, illustrators, painters and sculptors worked with Curwen and therefore could have taken prints from this very press!

In 1989 the company transferred to premises at Chilford Hall, Linton near Cambridge then recently to Great Thurlow where it continued under the guidance of Master Printer Stanley Jones MBE.  Sadly Jones passed last year (2023) but his legacy lives on at The Curwen Print Study Centre
